Celtic JewelryCeltic Jewelry Symbols and Meanings

It is easy to identify and distinguish a piece of Celtic jewelry in a wide range of different pieces of jewelry in your local jewelry store. Most, if not all, of these jewels were often the same kind of drawings. This does not mean that the designers of various Celtic jewelry are extremely limited in their ideas. Instead, the main reason why jewelry has been classified as Celtic jewelry is primarily due to various meanings these design elements have. That is also one reason some Celtic jewelry are also only worn and given during certain occasions.

Here are some of the most common symbols used in Celtic jewelry and their corresponding meaning.

Celtic cross

Because of its religious connotation, the cross has always been considered to resemble the faith and Christianity. In the case of the Celtic cross, the four different arms of the Celtic cross stand for the four different elements of the earth. These are earth, wind, fire and water. The cross itself symbolizes the connection and unity of the four elements. This is accentuated by the circle surrounding the Celtic cross. As such, Celtic jewelry that include the Celtic cross as its primary design pay tribute to the various elements of the earth, which according to ancient Celtic tradition, are the same factors that led to everything on earth to exist.

Celtic Spirals

Besides the Celtic cross, spiral designs are the most popular models used in a variety of Celtic jewelry. Generally, the spiral design symbolizes the development of life from birth until death. Go farther, how the spiral design has been built in different parts of Celtic jewelry provides a twist to this general sense. For example, a spiral that rotates clockwise symbolizes the life that began during the winter season. This is because the winter sun is represented by the clockwise. If the design of Celtic jewelry piece shows two spirals indirectly in opposite directions, this shows balance in life between good and evil.

Designs rope

Celtic jewelry use rope to complete the drawing Celtic crosses and spiral symbols to symbolize continuity. It is for this reason that many designers of different pieces of Celtic jewelry would often use the rope design for rings and bracelets, as opposed to earrings and necklace.

Knot Patterns

This particular design is a favorite for the marriage of several towns and engagement rings. Usually, the designs are Celtic knot jewelry in one or two nodes. The knot design symbolizes togetherness, loyalty and unison. Often they are used in conjunction with spiral Celtic designs. When designers choose to use models of nodes with spiral designs, these are designed so that the design does not seem to have a beginning and an end. This is to symbolize eternity and infinity, whose symbol coincidentally resembles that of a node without beginning and end.
