How thick does the floor protector under my wood stove should be? I want to know if I can put a layer of tile backer board on top of my hardwood floors, slate tile on top of the backer board, and my wood stove on top of tile or tile should be elevated above the ground? The stove is a Drolet HT-2000 The owner's manual is not clear on this, he said "Your wood stove should be placed on a noncombustible surface. The floor protector must
be under the stove, eighteen inches beyond the front and eight inches on each side of
the fuel loading and the initiation of the removal of ashes. "
Thank you
slate of high quality is an excellent choice! but it is far from backerboard adequate foundation for any stone or tile. backerboard has been used for a decade now and we have been tearing the left and right. what you need is a proper mud bed. I'd say about 3 inches thick and make sure the slate is S1 grade. This is a permanent installation. slate they sell in big boxes is below grade and S3 crumble apart under a stove. Guy no real tiles there even used backerboard, especially on a floor and especially with a wood stove on top. Good luck!
Thickness is not the issue here. It is the combustibility of the material that is the question. backer board for tile covered by slate tile is non-combustible.
Other measures are aimed at how the floor should extend beyond the range. The floor should rise from the rear wall or corner (follow the signs to place the stove in the right distance from the walls) and should extend eight inches to the left and right of the loading door Fuel and openings for the removal of ash, and 18 inches directly in front of the doors, from what you wrote. These are minimum distances, you can exceed them.
There are probably another requirement for the wall surfaces on non-fuel side and rear of the stove, depending on your setup - most people just wall tiles.
There will also be local codes that determine how you lead the stove outside. You should check with your local code enforcement where you live for those.
buy a standard plate stove its about half inch thick fireproof it has a metal covering too.
have one on my wood stove for the last 3 years and my floor is wood
Make sure the stove is a piece of metal (with a 1 "space) across the bottom. This keeps the soil from getting so hot you can not touch it.
In addition to these dimensions, your local code requirements must be met, so check with your local building inspection for what is legal in your county or state.
