They provide clean combustion at high temperature, good efficiency, a high degree of security, and little or no pollution. Masonry fireplaces have been designed to burn much hotter than the standard wood stove. In addition, they are able to retain heat longer than traditional fireplaces that preceded them.
Masonry chimneys can significantly reduce the security problems in wood. A cast iron stove, when lit, is often so hot he will burn anyone who touches it. However, manufacturers of brick chimneys, sometimes incorporating seats in the pan, because the external surfaces of a heater used correctly are very safe to touch.
In addition to building in the seats, it is common to also incorporate an oven to cook, and to a lesser extent, a domestic hot water coil.

Masonry chimneys are very well suited to new homes where floor plans allow for extra space needed. They can be adapted to many existing homes by placing the device in a basement or isolated in the living room supported by pillars of reinforced brickwork.

Unfortunately, since masonry fireplaces are built to individual specifications, they do not lend themselves easily to experimentation with necessary third-party certification to EPA. This certification is required to receive state and federal tax incentives and energy discounts.
Masonry chimneys excel not only in combustion efficiency, but also much better than wood stoves and metal chimneys of thermal efficiency. Thermal efficiency is measured in the proportion of the heat generated by the fire that is retained in the housing.
But do not expect a masonry heater to quickly cool your home. The first shot of the season will probably be 2 or 3 days to set fire to a comfortable level. Once this level is reached, however, you can count on the non-heat for drying the heating season with minimal cooking.
